Description of mathematical task:
1. Students will be given a number line & 5+4 domino.
2. I will demonstrate students how to add 5 & 4 using the number line.
3. After several tries, I will put my students in pairs, and give them some dominoes, counters and number lines so that they work in groups.
Question that I may give:
a. What number did you land on when you made a 5-hop, then a 3-hop?
[8.]b. Could you land on the same number if you took a 3-hop first, then a 5-hop? How do you know?
[Yes; 5 + 3 = 8, and 3 + 5 = 8.]c. What sums did you model with hops? How did you record them?
[Student responses will depend upon the "hops" they performed.]d. Were any of the sums the same? Why?
[Student responses will depend upon the "hops" they performed.]e. How would you find the sum of 2 and 5?
[Make a hop of 2, and then a hop of 5, to reach 7.]
Appropriate grade range: Pre-k to 5
Material: Dominoes, counters, and number lines.
Topics that the task develop: Addition and subtraction of integers.
