Description of mathematical task:
a. I will give students different colors of strips that have the same length.
b. Then I will tell them each strip will represent the whole or 1.
c. Then I will tell my students to fold the strips into twice or divided it into 4 or 8 or 16 equal pieces. I will also ask my students to divide it into 3 or 6 or 9 equal pieces. Then I will ask my students about theirs' observation.
d. Once I see that they understand the concept. I will ask them few more questions to solidify their understanding; for example,
1. When you folded your strip into two parts, what fraction of the whole strip did one strip represent?
[1/2.]
2. When you folded your strip into four parts, what fraction of the whole strip did one strip represent?
[1/4.]
3. What other fractions have the same value as 1/2?
[2/4, 3/6, 4/8.]
4. What other fraction has the same value as 2/3?
[4/6.]
Grade: 3-5
Topics that the task develop: Fraction, addition and subtraction of fractions.
Materials list: Fractions bars, scissors, chart paper.
Standards: Common Core State Standards – Practice
